Pressed Flower

If you get a chance, you need to see this in person.  All the petals and centerpiece are raised up in low relief with various thickness of cardboard before I applied the labels. One note to make, adding a three dimensional element allowed me not to use any dark labels.  All shadowing is from the light source.  Many thanks to Jessie Simon for taking the time and snapping the picture for me just before dusk. This is for an exhibit in September at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center. Please go to my new site, where I am selling signed giclee prints of this mosaic.

Suntaker #3 – 18 x 24

Suntaker #3I created this on the heels of other exhibit work for a silent auction this October benefiting Tarrant County’s local AIDS Outreach Center.  Last year I participated in the same auction being my first showing in 12 years.  Adding the fushia/purple hues was born out of frustration to make the image pop some more.  The background was a different approach, as I am finding the gray-area between recognizing the brand vs. the color of the label in the subject to be a problem that needs to be tightened up.  The image needs to spell out both  the retention of the brand while the creation holds its own ground.  Anyways, I am satisfied with the results as this opens the door a little more from certain constraints.

Please go to my new website. I am selling giclee prints of my recent work

Suntaker #2 – Mosaic of a sunflower made with recycled candy and drink labels
This is the fourth for the upcoming exhibit, depicting a sunflower. Despite the 100˚F heat we’ve had,  I still see these blooming nearby.  I had only 10 days to complete this mosaic so it can have a matching frame like the others.  On top of this, normal life events, routine, and my 8-5 job still pushed this aside as it should.  It seemed as if I completed this in a smaller amount of time.  All four wildflower mosaics will be on sale in the beginning of September, both at the exhibit and online.  I look forward to some rest, clean up and get ready for the next.

A Vibrant Morning Wake – Mosaic made with recycled candy and drink labels
A sincere thank you to Cindy Dyer. Check out her site. She took this image down in Austin at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. I came across this in a Google search. I was wanting to find a purple or light purple wildflower image. I have a good amount of purple labels and wrappers but never found the right picture to work from. I love the results. The purple is bright and colorful.

Firewheels on a Hot Summer Day – 12 x 18

Firewheels on a Hot Summer Day – Recycled Mosaic

I wondered how I could describe an entire field of firewheels, roasting in 100+ degree weather.  They almost seem burned by the sun, not as delicate.  When I made the smaller one, I caught that surprise in the flaws of this process.  The strong colors look great. It was quite a struggle to find a good point in changing the red over to yellow on the petals.  So I left the red to be closer to a tomato orange in order for the center to have more depth.

Blue-Eyed grass Duet – mosaic made with recycled candy and drink labels

A different approach for me.  This is one of four I am making for an exhibit in September, 2011. All four will be dealing with Texas Wildflowers. The label used the most is Shiner Blonde, a great Texas beer (which I am in need of more labels, btw)  This topic is to me, the spring season I look forward to that decorates the urban landscape in the DFW area. It’s an awakening from the cold slumber and a reminder that we have very little time before the 100˚F blasts of July/August.  They will be on sale for the duration of the month. Information will soon follow with better details when it is posted on the Fort Worth Community Arts Center website.

This is the second piece showing confrontation.  Lots of Sugar in the Raw in the background.  Cool colors this time.  I have plans to expand this theme a bit further.
